Two men convicted in beating Andover man in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — Two men have been acquitted of attempted murder but convicted of assault in a beating that fractured a Massachusetts man's skull in the heart of Manhattan's Greenwich Village. A third man was acquitted of all charges.

A jury convicted Hatem Farsakh today of a high-level gang assault charge. He was tried in absentia.

Sherif Rizk was convicted of a lower-level assault charge. Mahmoud Habib was completely acquitted.

The Manhattan district attorney's office said the defendants got into an argument, fetched a tire iron and baseball bat from Rizk's car and attacked a group of tourists early on Jan. 13.

Kevin McCarron, 24, of Andover, Mass., suffered a skull fracture.

The defense said the visitors were looking for a fight and ignited one by using anti-Arab slurs.
