SALEM — Thomas George, 18, is being held on $250,000 cash bail for allegedly stabbing his mother and hitting her in the head with a hammer this morning.
George was arraigned in 10th Circuit Court just after 2 p.m. today and charged with two counts of first-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
He's accused of stabbing his mother, Catherine George, in the neck, hand and leg, then striking her head with a hammer in their Cluff Crossing apartment before 8 a.m. today.
He fled the scene, leaving his mother bleeding and seriously injured in the family's apartment. He took off in the family's Kia, driving to Kendall Pond Road in Derry, where the family previously lived.
Police found the Kia, still running, but not Thomas George. He allegedly stole a Chevy Blazer from a nearby residence, drove back to Salem and returned to the apartment.
His mother called 911 herself. She was first taken to Lawrence General Hospital, then flown to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, where she is in stable condition.
Thomas George was taken into custody by Salem police, processed at their station, then transported to court about an hour ago for his arraignment.
