Police find guns during home search

Discover clothes, belongings of man murdered outside Sahara Club

METHUEN — Police seized two semi automatic handguns last night during a search of a home that’s been linked to the murder outside the Sahara Club early Wednesday morning.

City police, joined by State Police detectives assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, also found some clothes and personal belongings of the murder victim — David Rivera, 28, of 246 Farnham St., Lawrence — inside one of the bedrooms of the 21/2-story, wooden frame house at 74 Elmwood Road, according to Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon.

“State Police crime scene technicians have taken the weapons for analysis,” Solomon said in an interview last night.

“They will do ballistics, fingerprints and DNA tests to determine if the guns are connected to the shooting,” the chief said.

Rivera was with a group of people who were at the Sahara Club celebrating a birthday party earlier in the evening, according to Solomon.

Police received several 911 calls about a shooting near the club shortly after 1 a.m. Rivera was taken to Lawrence General Hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later, according to a spokesman for District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

Nobody has been charged in connection with Rivera’s murder, though police charged 31-year-old Marcos Rizzo for breaking and entering at the Elmwood Road home yesterday.

“He didn’t have permission to be there and broke in through the window,” Solomon said.

Meanwhile, police learned that at least four of the people they met at 74 Elmwood Road yesterday prior to the search — including Rivera’s girlfriend — were also at the Sahara Club Wednesday morning, according to Solomon.

“They were the same individuals who were at the party the night of the shooting. Everyone claims they don’t live there,” the chief said.

“But the house is connected to one of the witnesses who used to live there. We also found a whole bedroom full of clothing and belongings of the victim. The weapons were recovered in another bedroom,” he said.
