Share your memories of Colleen Ritzer

ANDOVER — As plans are finalized for next month’s inaugural Step Up For Colleen Ritzer 5K walk and run through Andover, The Eagle-Tribune’s sister paper, The Andover Townsman, is seeking to honor the slain Danvers High School teacher who spent her life in Andover.

Special memories, anecdotes and photos of Ritzer are being sought from her friends, colleagues, former teachers and anyone touched in some way by her life for inclusion in a special section aimed at commemorating the first 5K walk and run in her name

Step Up for Colleen Ritzer is planned for Sunday, May 4 — nine days before what would have been Ritzer’s 25th birthday. A sizable turnout is expected for the event, which gets underway at 9 a.m. and will start and end at The Park in downtown Andover at Chestnut and Bartlet streets.

The course primarily travels through the southern part of Andover, with a portion winding through parts of the bird sanctuary at Phillips Academy. Participants are urged to wear pink, Ritzer’s favorite color. Proceeds will benefit the Step Up for Colleen Fund at Essex County Community Foundation.

Memories and thoughts about Ritzer and what she meant to those who knew her may be submitted by email to editor Sonya Vartabedian at townsman@andovertownsman.com or by mail to The Townsman, 33 Chestnut St., Andover 01810. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, April 10.

The registration fee for both the run and walk is $25 in advance, $30 on race day. T-shirts are guaranteed to all runners who register by April 21. Race-day registration will take place at the nearby Doherty Middle School gym on Bartlet Street.
