Standoff ends after 5 hours in Londonderry

Suspect was armed with hatchet, knife

LONDONDERRY — A man armed with a Leatherman knife and a hatchet held police at bay for nearly five hours before he was shot with a Taser and arrested early yesterday morning.

William Silva, 44, who has 19-page court record, according to the police prosecutor, is being held on $10,000 cash bail in the county jail. The drywall installer is charged with three counts of criminal threatening, resisting arrest and being a felon in possession of a deadly weapon, the hatchet.

In court yesterday, Silva said the Leatherman is “a utensil I use to feed my family.”

Police were called to 3 Ash St. at 11:19 p.m. Thursday for a report of an unwanted person. It would be past 4 a.m. before Silva was taken into custody.

Homeowner James Innie said he wanted Silva, whom he described as his daughter’s boyfriend, removed from the house. Innie told police Silva had threatened to “stomp” and kick him. He also said Silva had threatened two other people in the home.

When police arrived, Silva had barricaded himself in a bedroom above the garage and was refusing to come out. Silva had blood on his head, a black eye and several visible bruises, police said. He spoke to an officer through an open window and said he had been in a fight earlier Thursday evening in Manchester.

Silva told police he was in a fight with four people who had used his own boots to beat him, according to a court affidavit.

But Silva said he wouldn’t leave the house and told police if they came in, he “wouldn’t go without a fight,” according to the affidavit. He also threatened to harm himself if police tried to remove him.

Innie told police Silva had a hatchet and an unknown number of knives in the bedroom. More officers responded and ordered Silva repeatedly to surrender. He grew increasingly belligerent, cursing police and urging them to enter the room where he would fight with them.
