Alleged car thief arrested

LAWRENCE — A prompt 911 call led to the arrest of an alleged car thief yesterday afternoon, police said.

A relative of the owner of the car saw a man attempting to enter the vehicle and called 911 at around 1 p.m., interim police Chief James Fitzpatrick said. Officer Angel Lopez went to the scene in front of the Costanza Market at Alder and Bennington streets and arrested William Santiago, 48, of Bromfield Street.

Santiago was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and possession of burglarious tools. As of last night, he remained held at the police station pending his arraignment in Lawrence District Court today, Fitzpatrick said.
