Man found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in death of delivery man

LAWRENCE - A city man was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the robbery and resulting death of a food delivery man.

Daniel Lee Lopez, 24, of Lawrence, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Thu Nguyen, 59, of Methuen. A jury cleared Lopez of the murder charge, but found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter and unarmed robbery. Lopez faces up to 20 years in prison for the manslaughter conviction and up to life in prison for the unarmed robbery conviction.

The other man charged in the robbery, Ronny Ramos, 20 of Lawrence, was found not guilty of unarmed robbery and larceny of a person.

Nguyen, a Vietnamese immigrant and father of three who worked a second job delivering Chinese food, died following the July 30, 2009 robbery. Prosecutors alleged Lopez and Ramos called the Evergreen Restaurant at 105 So. Union St. that night with the intent of robbing Nguyen and stealing the food. But at 10 p.m., Nguyen was struck, fell to the ground and fractured his skull on the sidewalk near the low-income housing development near Lawrence High School.

Dr. Marie Cannon, a state medical examiner, testified that Nguyen suffered a 5-inch skull fracture. She said his cause of death was blunt force head trauma that led to fatal brain bleeding.
