Motive still unclear in Lawrence shooting Saturday

LAWRENCE - A 50-year-old man shot in the abdomen near his Haverhill Street home Saturday night was upgraded from critical to serious condition yesterday, police said.

Police are hoping to speak with the shooting victim early this week to determine a motive in the 9 p.m. attack near 570 Haverhill St.

That night, police were called to the area for “a report of shots fired and a man down.”

Officers found the man shot in the lower abdomen and lying on the ground surrounded by a group of people, according to a report filed by Sgt. Joseph Cerullo.

A witness told Cerullo he was standing on his porch nearby “when he heard what he believed to be one gun shot.” Then he saw a man in black run up Haverhill Street toward Milton Street, Cerullo wrote.

It’s unclear if the man was targeted or why. The man initially told police he wasn’t confronted for money.

However, a woman who rendered First Aid after the shooting, said the victim told her he was approached by two men directly in front of his house. One of the men asked him for money while the other pulled out a gun and shot him, according to another report filed by Officer Robert Moody.

The man shot was taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment. His clothing was later seized as evidence. Lawrence detectives and state police crime scene investigators were called to the area, which was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.
