Lawrence police make an arrest in teen's murder

LAWRENCE - A Willow Street teen was charged tonight with shooting and killing Richard Bonilla, 18, of Lowell, on a Broadway sidewalk early Sunday morning.

Ismael Calixto, 18, was charged with murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and discharging a firearm within city limits when he was arrested at 8:30 p.m. at his 32 Willow St. home, police Chief John Romero said.

Calixto is charged with shooting Bonilla in the head at 400 Broadway at 1 a.m. Sunday. Bonilla died Sunday afternoon after being airlifted to a Boston hospital.

Police have not commented publicly on a motive for the shooting. Romero did say gang involvement “has not been ruled out.”

Bonilla had been at a party early Sunday. The shooting took place about a block away from the party after an argument occurred because several women were denied access to the gathering.

The arrest was made by Lawrence police and state troopers assigned to District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office.

Calixto is being held pending his arraignment in Lawrence District Court tomorrow.
