Windham woman confronts burglary suspects with broom

WINDHAM — A snowbank and a 64-year-old woman with a broom tripped up two burglary suspects yesterday.

Police charged the two Massachusetts men – Robert P. Dalton, 35, of Lowell and Vietnam M. Dang, 34, of Worcester – with burglary.

Dalton also was charged with robbery.

Police said they two were being taken to Rockingham County jail, pending court action.

The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. when the West Shore Road resident saw the two inside a neighbor’s home.

The woman told police that before calling them, she entered the neighbor’s home herself to see what they were doing.

She said she discovered they had broken through two locked doors.

They fled when they heard her and police said she confronted Dalton in the driveway with the broom.

Police said she was thrown to the ground by Dalton, before he got into his vehicle, parked in the driveway.

“In his attempt to flee, the suspect backed into a snowbank on the property,” Chief Gerald Lewis said in a press release detailing the incident.

“During his attempt to free the vehicle, the neighbor ran home and called police,” Lewis said.

When police arrived, they took Dalton into custody.

Dang fled on foot before police got there, but officers found him later and took him into custody.

Windham is among several border communities coping with recent burglary problems.

Two New Hampshire men were arrested earlier this week in Pelham in connection with at least 20 burglaries in Pelham, Windham, Hudson, Danville, Sandown, Dracut and Tyngsborough.
