Two-way race for selectman in Windham

WINDHAM – A former School Board member is challenging a former selectman in the race to succeed Selectmen’s Chairman Bruce Breton.

Breton is not seeking re-election. He is stepping aside for health reasons.

Former School Board member Al Letizio Jr. and former Selectman Alan Carpenter are seeking a three-year term on the board.

In announcing his candidacy, Carpenter expressed concern over a lack of civility in local elections. He said he would focus on issues, not personalities or party politics.

Carpenter pointed to his past experience as a selectman and Planning Board member as an asset, as well as his fiscally conservative philosophy.

He is advocating responsible growth as the town moves through Interstate 93 widening and Route 111 reconstruction.

“After years of careful planning, we have a terrific opportunity to bring much needed tax revenue and much desired services to our community,” Carpenter said. “We have to promote smart commercial development, while protecting our town’s resources, such as our great ponds and water supplies.”

Letizio said he wants to put his conservative business and community principles to work for the town.

He is pointing to his background as a former School Board member and current member of the town’s Economic Development Committee as something that could benefit Windham.

Letizio is stressing the need to improve infrastructure, while keeping the tax burden under control.

“We do have the ability to provide much needed taxpayer relief to our residential tax base, while responsibly funding our needs for the forseeable future,” Letizio said. “We need to continue on a positive path that allows us to fund our infrastructure needs in a more balanced manner without further burdening our residents and I know that it can be done.”
