Man accused of shooting 'snitch'

LAWRENCE — A 21-year-old man who has already served jail sentences for illegal drugs and firearms possession is now accused of shooting his former friend outside an Essex Street store and then trying to evade police when they cornered him on Broadway.

Jordan “Smokey” Vasquez, 21, was held on $500,000 cash yesterday after his arraignment on assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, illegal possession of a loaded firearm and other related charges in Lawrence District Court yesterday.

Vasquez, of 80 Railroad St., second floor, Lawrence, is accused of shooting former friend Luis Colon, 27, after he ran into him and his girlfriend as they were shopping at a store at 490 Essex St. around 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Vasquez and Colon knew each other from the Boston area “but had a falling out when Smokey called Colon a snitch,” according to a report written by arresting Officer Kevin Schiavone.

When Colon and his girlfriend left the store that day, Vasquez “brandished a small gun from his right-side waist band” and then shot directly at the 2003 Honda Accord Colon was driving, Schiavone wrote. Bullets shattered the driver’s and passenger’s front window and Colon was hit in the left hand and head. His girlfriend told police she heard Colon “scream in pain and start crying he was shot.”

Colon kept driving while the woman called 911 and told police what had happened. Colon drove himself to Lawrence General Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Meanwhile, police headed toward McDonald’s on Broadway (Route 28) where Vasquez was spotted walking around in the parking lot, according to Schiavone’s report. When the officer approached him, Vasquez refused to stop and then ran into traffic on Broadway. Other officers responded and at one point Vasquez rolled over and off the top of the hood of a police cruiser.
