Bullets hit family SUV, parked car

LAWRENCE — Someone opened fire on Avon Street Sunday afternoon and bullets hit a family car passing by as well as parked car.

A bullet was lodged in a back window of a Ford Flex SUV. Two girls, ages 4 and 6, were sitting in the back of the car when it was hit. Their parents were sitting in the front of the car, according to a police report.

The father went to police and filed a report after he was driving on Jackson Street near Avon Street just before 1 p.m. and saw a man running. He “heard what sounded like several gunshots,” according to a report by Sgt. Michael Simard.

Simard inspected the Ford Flex and found “the vehicle was struck on the passenger side rear window with a stray bullet.” Simard found a bullet fragment embedded in the window near the frame, he wrote.

“It should be noted the path of the bullet was just a few feet away from where the two young girls were sitting inside the vehicle in the rear seat,” Simard wrote in his report.

Almost simultaneously, police received a report of a shooting at 35 Avon St. A man living there told police a gray Acura TSX drove by and a man pulled out a gun and fired shots at the corner of Avon and Wilmot streets.

Three bullets were fired through a nearby car. Police also recovered six 9mm Lugar rounds in the area.

Officer George Wood wrote the witness was uncooperative at this time (except) to say he is familiar with who shot at him ... there has been an ongoing issue for three months (but) he declined to say what.”
