Store clerk pepper-sprayed, robbed

LAWRENCE — Two masked men robbed a South Broadway convenience store late Sunday night, attacking the clerk with pepper spray and stealing cash and cigarettes.

Police were called to the Tedeschi’s market at 208 So. Broadway at 11:30 p.m. and found the 42-year-old clerk holding her left eye. The woman said two men entered the store, one armed with pepper spray and the other holding a knife.

The men stole cash from two separate registers and cigarettes from a display. One man sprayed her with pepper spray before running out of the store, she told police.

A store manager arrived at the store and pulled the surveillance tape for police. The video showed two men entering the store at 11:30 p.m. One male was taller and was holding a large kitchen knife in his hand. He wearing a black jacket, red bandanna over his face, blue jeans, light brown work boots, according to a report by Officer Robert Moody.

The second male wore a gray plaid jacket, red bandanna over his face, blue jeans and black sneakers. He sprayed the clerk with pepper spray, Moody wrote.

The entire robbery took less than a minute, Moody wrote.

Numerous cruisers searched the area for the suspects. The clerk said both men ran east on Andover Street toward Parker Street.

The clerk was taken to Lawrence General Hospital.
