Lawrence police seize assault rifle in drug bust

LAWRENCE — Police seized an assault rifle from the car of a suspected drug dealer yesterday.

Officers of the Police Department’s Street Narcotics Enforcement Unit arrested two local men on weapons and drug-related charges stemming from a narcotics investigation in Costello Park, near Shawsheen Road in the southeast section of the city.

Detective David J. Moynihan Jr. discovered a High Point 9 mm assault-style rifle with a scope inside a duffel bag he found on the floor of Hyundai Sonata which police had just stopped. The gun had a clip that could hold up to 10 bullets.

“This was a significant weapon that was taken off the street today,” Lawrence Police Chief John Romero said.

“You want to get all guns off the street. But a gun of that capacity, you never want to see on the street. This goes to show you how intertwined drugs are with other violent crimes,” the chief said.

Charged were:

Derlin Cedano, 32, of 133 Pleasant St., North Andover, with possession of heroin with intent to distribute near a school or park, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, possession of a large capacity firearm, unlicensed possession of a firearm and providing false name to police after arrest.

Pedro J. Sanchez-Torres, 26, of 212 Wilson St., Haverhill, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, possession of heroin with intent to distribute near a school or park, distribution of heroin near a school or park, possession of a large capacity firearm, unlicensed possession of a firearm.

Police identified Sanchez-Torres as the driver of the SUV and seized close to six grams of heroin from his groin area.

John King, 30, of Biddeford, Maine, and Amy Laverriere, 29, of Kennebunkport, Maine, were also arrested on possession of heroin charges during yesterday’s drug investigation. Police said they found the couple in King’s parked car, preparing to inject themselves with the drug just before noon.
