UPDATED, with video: NYC beating victim a former Central Catholic hockey star

The 24-year-old Andover man who was savagely beaten early Sunday in New York City's Greenwich Village is a former Central Catholic High School hockey star and National Honor Society member.

Kevin McCarron is "fighting for his life" after being set upon by a "gang of toughs" who beat him with a baseball bat and tire iron, fracturing his skull, the New York Daily News reported.

According to the story, police and witnesses said McCarron and friends were leaving a MacDougal Street pizzeria about 5:15 a.m. Sunday when they got into an argument with another group of men, one of whom may have been sitting on the car McCarron and friends had driven into town.

The attackers went to their own car and grabbed the bat, tire iron and a blackjack from the trunk and returned to beat McCarron into unconsciousness, then repeatedly stomped him as he lay on the ground.

McCarron was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

"This kid, unfortunately, got it bad," said Detective Martin Speechley, a spokesman for the New YorkPolice Department.

The incident happened outside Artichoke Bassille Pizza & Bar at 111 MacDougal St., two blocks south of Washington Square Park.

The Daily News said a relative, Patrick McCarron, believed to be his brother, was also injured but not as seriously.

Police have arrested two of the suspected attackers. As many as five others are being sought, according to published reports.

Hatem Sarsakh, 24, of 8510 7th Ave., Brooklyn, is being charged with attempted criminally negligent homicide. Sherif Rizk, 22, of 1620 66th St., Brooklyn, is being charged with attempted criminally negligent homicide and gang assault and assault with a weapon — either a bat or a blackjack, said New York Police spokesman Detective Martin Speechley. The spokesman said the investigation is continuing.
