Two arrested in Lawrence after hitting trooper

LAWRENCE — Two people were arrested this morning in Lawrence after a chase that began when a car fleeing a trafic stop on Interstate 93 hit a state trooper in the arm.

The trooper had pulled the car over on I-93 in Woburn about 5:30 a.m., but it suddenly sped away when the trooper got out of his cruiser and approached the car.

Troopers from Troop A pursued the car through Reading, North Reading and Andover. The car was traced to Thrifty Car Rental in Lawrence.

Andover police spotted the car traveling north on Route 28 about 6 a.m. When the car fled again, police deployed Stop Sticks in Lawrence to deflate its tires.

The pursuit continued at low speeds through Lawrence until the car was stopped and two occupants were arrested on Willard Street, police said.

Names of the suspects and the condition of the trooper were not immediatey available.
