Community supports program for homeless families

DERRY — Family Promise of Greater Rockingham County exceeded expectations with a recent benefit and is now getting help from area Girl Scouts.

Program director Victoria McKinney-Vareschi said the group, organized by 15 churches in the region to help homeless families, raised about $9,000 at a recent benefit.

Salem businessman Henry Glickel and his wife, Robyn, planned the “Fund the Van” night that McKinney-Vareschi said raised at least twice what the group hoped.

Family Promise was able to finish paying for the 16-passenger van, thanks to the benefit casino night.

The van will transport families from area churches that will host them at night to Family Promise’s day center at Calvary Baptist Church in East Derry for programs.

Area Girl Scouts plan to deliver several carloads of blankets collected for the group this week, McKinney-Vareschi said.

Family Promise is close to accepting its first family, a goal for this winter.

“We are fielding calls from families now,” she said. “We are on track or close to it.”

The group also is recruiting a driver for the passenger van.
