Lantigua recall effort turns in just enough signatures

LAWRENCE - Leaders of a group trying to recall Mayor William Lantigua turned in 5,500 signatures seeking the mayor's ouster to City Hall today, just barely beating the 5,232 mandated minimum.

Organizers of the recall effort "It's Your Right" say volunteers will continue to collect signatures until the 5 p.m. deadline.

In order to get to the next step, 5,232 of the signatures collected must be verified as registered voters by the City Clerk's office. City Clerk William Maloney says the process of verifying those signatures has begun. Should the group have enough verified signatures, the Board of Registrars will meet tomorrow to decide whether to certify them, Maloney said.

If the signatures are certified, Lantigua has five days to resign or the City Council will vote on whether to hold a recall election. If the election is held, voters would be asked whether they want to recall Lantigua and be presented with a slate of candidates to replace him.

Lantigua did not respond for comment.
