LONDONDERRY — A man was flown by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital early last night after the BMW he was driving crashed into a white GMC Box truck.
No information was available last night on the man’s identity, the hospital he was taken to or his condition following the accident that happened shortly before 5 p.m. near 64 Rockingham Road.
Emergency crews had to cut off the roof of the BMW to remove the injured driver from the wreckage. Both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions at the time of the crash.
“The box truck ultimately turned onto its side, crashing into the utility pole, and the utility pole penetrated the box truck,” Londonderry Police Sgt. Mark Morrison said last night.
“Before the truck could be removed, the utility companies had to respond to maintain control of the pole, which was snapped inside the body of the truck. To make matters worse, there was a large amount gasoline and diesel fuel that had to be removed from the truck before the truck could be hoisted off the pole,” Sgt. Morrison said.
“They were afraid of compromising the container and spilling the diesel fuel all over on the ground,” he said.
The driver of the box truck was not injured in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
Rockingham Road remained closed for several hours as police continued to investigate the crash.
“It was right at peak traffic time,” Sgt. Morrison said.
The road was expected to open around 10 p.m. last night, at least to partial traffic.
