Snow expected tonight and tomorrow; Tuesday morning commute could be difficult

Winter is hanging on in New England, with temperatures staying low and a big snowstorm approaching the region.

The National Weather Service says the snow is expected to start late Monday and pick up overnight and into Tuesday.

Snow will fall heavily at times Tuesday in much of New Hampshire, Vermont and western Maine.

It is expected to be mostly rain on Cape Cod and the islands, with 1-3 inches in Boston, and more inland. Parts of the Merrimack Valley could see up to 8 inches of snow.

The snow is expected to turn over to mostly rain by Tuesday afternoon in Eastern Massachusetts.

About 10 to 14 inches is forecast for New Hampshire and Maine, and 10 to 18 inches have been forecast for higher elevations in Vermont.

Up north, the snow is expected to taper off Wednesday.
