Police: Man attacked uncle with ax

LONDONDERRY — A 33-year-old man faces numerous charges after police said he attacked his uncle with an ax.

Aaron McDermott of 8 Boston Ave. allegedly struck Marc Vitti twice with an ax during a fight at their home, police said.

Vitti told police McDermott hit him in the back and the elbow, but the injuries were not serious, according to Londonderry police Lt. Timothy Jones. He did not require hospitalization.

Officers responded to the Boston Avenue home after a 911 call was received about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The dispatcher heard McDermott say, “I’m going to rip your head off,” Officer Narciso Garcia said in his report.

Vitti told police he asked his nephew to leave the home, but it led to an argument and an altercation, Jones said.

McDermott then struck Vitti with the ax, Jones said.

Vitti told police that when he tried to call 911 three times, McDermott knocked the telephone away each time. The call went through on the third attempt.

When Garcia asked Vitti about the threat heard over the phone, the uncle said, “Oh yeah, I thought he was going for my head.”

While at the home, police seized a drug they believed to be heroin, Jones said.

McDermott was charged with second-degree assault, criminal threatening with a deadly weapon, criminal trespass, possession of a controlled drug and three counts of obstructing a report of a crime or injury.

He was still being held at the county jail last night on $50,000 cash bail. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Monday in 10th Circuit Court in Derry.
