Sullivan portrait could finally be hung this week

LAWRENCE — The wait is almost over for former Mayor Michael Sullivan.

For 31/2 years, his picture has been missing from the collection of a 52 portraits of previous city mayors in the City Council chambers at City Hall, an apparent oversight by Mayor William Lantigua’s administration.

But, by Wednesday of last week, a frame was purchased for Sullivan’s ceremonial mugshot, and City Clerk William Maloney e-mailed Sullivan telling him to pick out whatever version of his likeness he’d liked posted for posterity.

“... it’s ready to go and a picture will slide nicely in the back like any other frame,” Maloney wrote to Sullivan, who was mayor for eight years.

Maloney also said he was having a small plate made up for the frame that reads “Mayor Michael J. Sullivan, Nov. 8, 2001 to January, 4, 2010.”

Sullivan last week picked out a picture with help from Thomas Schiavone, his former chief economic development director. The picture should be officially hung in the chamber this week.

Going forward, Sullivan said he hopes “a policy is put in place to hang the mayoral picture on a much more timely basis.”

He thanked resident Johnny Castillo who last month brought the issue to his and other city officials’ attention.

“This is important for the city of Lawrence and the tradition needs to continue,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan’s picture will measure 11 by 14 inches. It will not be the life-size version of himself in a Speedo bathing suit on Salisbury Beach he previously joked about, however.

“As far as the history books go, I figured 100 years from now, my great great grandkids wouldn’t appreciate the Speedo. So it will just be a headshot,” Sullivan said with a chuckle.
