Man knocked out during iPhone wait

SALEM, N.H. — A man was left unconscious after an altercation at The Mall at Rockingham Park yesterday morning as hundreds of people waited in line for release of the latest iPhone.

Two other people in line were arrested on unrelated charges, according to Salem Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten.

The unidentified man was found lying in brush outside the mall about 6:45 a.m. as people waited for it to open at 8 a.m., he said.

The man, who apparently had been assaulted, remained unconscious as he was placed in an ambulance and taken to a local hospital, Patten said. He later woke up and was treated and released, Patten said.

None of the hundreds of people in line admitted to witnessing the assault, which remains under investigation, he said.

Police responded to the mall several times overnight to control the crowd, Patten said. Shoppers started lining up about midnight, he said.

A man and woman from Peabody, Mass., were arrested on trespassing charges after they became unruly, Patten said.

They were identified as Mark Young, 24, and Jennifer Young, 22. Jennifer Young was also charged with possession of marijuana, Patten said.

Both were released on $1,000 personal recognizance pending their arraignment in 10th Circuit Court.
