North Andover lab explosion sends man to the hospital

NORTH ANDOVER — A lab explosion yesterday left a man with serious burns covering half of his body including his face and arms.

North Andover Fire Department and EMS medflighted the man, who has not been identified, to a Boston hospital after a explosion at Rohm and Haas laboratory at 60 Willow St.

According to the fire department, the man was working alone in a lab when the explosion occurred around 11:42 a.m. The injured man was medflighted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, for treatment of the burns, as well as lower extremity trauma.

“I would say his injuries were survivable,” Lt. Michael Beirne said. “We were most concerned about his burns more than anything.”

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation by the fire department and State Fire Marshall.

The Rohm and Haas lab has been shut down until further notice.
