Luck runs out after casino encounter

SALEM — An encounter police believe started at Foxwoods Resort Casino Sunday ended badly Monday morning.

Two women are in the county jail on numerous charges after they were arrested for allegedly stealing a local man’s cash, checks and credit cards.

From what police have put together, they believe Arnold Shorrock, 68, of Millville Circle met a 29-year-old woman at the Mashantucket, Conn., casino Sunday, Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten said. They believe she returned to Salem with him and spent the night.

She called a friend for a ride the next morning, he said. Police were not sure yesterday which of the two women charged spent the night with Shorrock at his modest home.

“They apparently formulated a plan to rob him of his cash, credit cards and checks sometime during the morning,” Patten said. “We think the victim may have caught on before they left.”

Shorrock called 911 just before 9 a.m. Monday with a good description of the suspects and their vehicle, he said.

Officers on patrol were advised to be on the lookout for the women, he said, and they were soon spotted in the depot area.

But in the approximately 15 minutes between the alleged theft and their arrest, Heather Middleton, 29, of Sarasota, Fla., and Kiow Sharpe, 29, of Lowell already had managed to steal more than $1,800 from Shorrock, Patten said.

The women made several stops at ATMs and a convenience store, he said, making cash withdrawals and buying cartons of cigarettes. Police recovered more than $1,500 in cash, two credit cards, six personal checks and cartons of cigarettes.

The women were arrested and remained in the county jail yesterday for lack of cash bail. Both face numerous charges.

Middleton is being held on $15,000 cash bail. She faces two felony charges of fraudulent use of a credit card, as well as charges of receiving stolen property, falsifying physical evidence, attempt to commit credit card fraud and criminal liability for the conduct of another.

Sharpe, jailed for lack of $5,000 cash bail, also faces two felony charges for fraudulent use of a credit card. In addition, she is charged with receiving stolen property and attempt to commit credit card theft.

Patten said he wasn’t sure of the relationship between the two women and police are still piecing together what transpired.
