Wilfredo Laboy II, son of ex-Lawrence superintendent admits to perjury

LAWRENCE —

Wilfredo Laboy II, son of the city's disgraced former school superintendent, pleaded guilty to perjury this morning and was sentenced by a Superior Court judge to one year of supervised probation.

Laboy, 37, of Methuen, had been charged with lying twice to an Essex County grand jury about using Lawrence public school resources to print menus for his pizza shop, get rides to work “on a daily basis” and have repairs and odd jobs done at his home.

The perjury trial was scheduled to start this morning in Lawrence Superior Court, but Laboy pleaded guilty as the trial was just getting underway.

Laboy's father, Wilfredo Laboy Sr., was convicted on March 22, 2012, of felony fraud and embezzlement charges. The Lawrence superintendent for nearly 10 years, Laboy was convicted of abusing public school resources for personal gain, using school employees to run his personal errands and having pizza menus and other items for his son’s business printed in the school department.

He was sentenced to 2 years in jail, with 90 days to be served. However, he served only 60 days at the Correctional Alternative Center in Lawrence, known as the Farm, after he was released 30 days early for good behavior.

The former Lawrence Schools superintendent was not present for his son's trial today.

The younger Laboy faced 2 1/2 to 20 years in jail for the perjury conviction. He also has 2 previous drunken driving convictions.

Instead, the judge decided to give him one year of supervised probation.
