Teen pleads not guilty in Danvers teacher's slaying

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — SALEM, Mass. — Philip Chism, the 14-year-old Danvers teenager charged with robbing, raping and killing his teacher, Colleen Ritzer, pleaded not guilty this afternoon to all charges during his arraignment in Salem Surperior Court.

Chism was indicted last month in the oct. 22 slaying, which began in a bathroom at Danvers High School. Ritzer, 24, of Andover, was a math teacher at the school.

Chism was wearing a sweater, tie and khakis, in contrast to his initial court appearance, when he was wearing a plastic coverall.

He uttered only two words during the hearing: "Not guilty."

His attorney, Denise Regan, had tried to prevent his appearance in the courtroom but Judge Howard Whitehead ordered him brought to the defense table.

Chism remains held without bail, which is standard in murder cases.

Much of the hearing was taken up with procedural matters.
