Pelham man indicted on 11 charges in police chase

Salem, Lawrence men indicted for crash, theft

BRENTWOOD — A Pelham man has been indicted on charges he drove a car at police officers and struck two police cruisers, prompting officers to shoot him.

Grant Hebert, 22, was recently indicted on the 11 charges in Rockingham Superior Court. He was one of several dozen people to be indicted by a grand jury this month.

The other cases include a Salem man charged in a serious crash in Danville two years ago and a Lawrence man charged with robbing a Lowe’s store in Salem and threatening an employee with a hypodermic needle, declaring he had AIDS.

Hebert led officers on a chase Oct. 28 that began in Pelham and ended in a Windham field after he drove more than 90 mph and crashed through a fence on Lowell Road, police said.

Hebert crashed his Hyundai Tiburon into a steel gate and toward police officers. He struck a cruiser from Windham and one from Pelham, the indictments said. He was wounded when shot by police numerous times.

Hebert could face years in prison if convicted. He is charged with three counts of reckless conduct, three counts of criminal mischief, two counts of attempted first-degree assault and single counts of disobeying an officer, aggravated driving while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated. He has been free on bail.

The grand jury also indicted Kevin Rodwell, 27, of Salem on two felony charges each of second-degree assault and reckless conduct for an accident July 19, 2011, on Route 111 in Danville. It closed a three-mile stretch of highway for four hours.

Rodwell’s westbound Mazda Protege crossed the centerline and struck an Elantra head on, seriously injuring himself, the 41-year-old driver of the Elantra and her 2-year-old son.

Tracy Anne Descoteaux, 41, of Brentwood was taken to Lawrence General Hospital. Her son and Rodwell were flown by medical helicopters to a Boston hospital.
