Salem soldier killed in training exercise

SALEM — A soldier from Salem killed in a training exercise in Kentucky has been described as a "stand-up" individual.

Capt. Shawn Hogan, 28, a 2002 Salem High School graduate, died last week when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding flipped over.

Hogan was a member of the 5th Special Forces Group at Fort Campbell, according to The Associated Press.

Selectmen's Chairman Patrick Hargreaves said this morning his son, Christopher Hargreaves, and Hogan were good friends as children.

"He was a stand-up, take-charge kind of guy," Patrick Hargreaves recalled.

Hogan was the 2006 class valedictorian of Virginia Military Institute. He was the son of Richard and Jean Hogan of Salem. They could not be reached for comment this morning.

A funeral service is set for 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Mary Queen of Peace Church in Salem.
