Plaistow prepares for Old Home Day

PLAISTOW— It’s been a tradition in town for more than 100 years — and it returns tomorrow.

Old Home Day will start early tomorrow on the town green in front of Plaistow Town Hall. Organizers have games, races, contests and other activities on tap for an all-day event.

“We’ve gone a little bigger this year,” said Dan Bush, chairman of the Old Home Day Committee. “We have some new things in store for everyone.”

Former Bruins player and coach Terry O’Reilly will be making an appearance on behalf of the William C. Bartlett fund. Bartlett was seriously injured in a house fire in town last month.

Bush said the event started in the early 20th century, and expanded every year into the big festival it has become.

“Originally, it was more of a block party type of event,” he said. “Then people started selling crafts and its become what it is today.”

Bush said the highlight of the day is the parade in the afternoon.

“It’s something everyone looks forward to,” he said. “It always is highlighted on town pride.”

The parade will include antique cars, marching bands, floats, beauty queens and much more.

“We even have a surprise in store,” Bush said. “It’s an old favorite that everyone will remember.”

There will be many events ongoing throughout the day. New to this year’s festival is a photo scavenger hunt with some lucrative prizes.

“People will team up and get a packet with tasks, and they’ll have to use their own camera to complete as many tasks as they can in two hours,” said Bush’s sister, Haley, who will be the committee chairman next year.

The winners will receive a $200 Wal-Mart gift card.

Dan Bush said the annual “baby” contest is also popular with residents. Kids are invited to compete in a pageant, which shows off a special talent and will be judged by town officials.
