Police increase security after school threat

Windham superintendent alerts parents in message last night

WINDHAM — Police plan additional patrols at the town’s schools today in response to a reported “tweeted threat” received last night, according to Superintendent Henry LaBranche.

Several police agencies are also conducting an investigation into threat, according to a message Dr. LaBranche sent out to parents.

“In preparation for school tomorrow and knowing that the safety of all students is a priority at all times for everyone in the community, I have directed that their be a police detail at each of our schools for the entire day tomorrow (today),” LaBranche said in the message.

“In addition, the department will continue the rolling patrols and will have an enhanced presence at all schools tomorrow (today). As I receive additional information it will be shared with parents,” he said.

Dr. LaBranche said he first learned of the potential threat at 9:20 p.m. after being notified of a letter that had been generated by the principal of a parochial school in Willimantic, Conn. to her parents.

“The letter explains that a tweeted threat, originally thought to be directed at their district, which is the Windham, CT school district, was not intended for them but for Windham, NH,” Dr. LaBranche said in his message to Windham parents.

“Further the letter indicated that the matter had been referred to the NH State Police. I have been in contact with the our Windham Police Department and have confirmed the following: the NH State Police were not contacted until the Windham Police Department did so this evening; the FBI has been informed of the situation; and essentially this remains an on-going investigation,” the superintendent said.

Specific details of the threat were unclear.

Police only confirmed that they are investigating it and will assign additional patrols at Windham schools today.
