Student who made threats to remain in custody

LAWRENCE — The 17-year-old Methuen High student accused of threatening an attack on the school was ordered yesterday in district court to remain in custody.

Jacob Butze-Maille, a junior, was arrested on Dec. 6 after he allegedly told another student he planned to “pull another Columbine,” and then threatened her if she told anyone.

Butze-Maille did not appear in Lawrence District Court yesterday, though he has been held in custody since his arrest.

His attorney, Jessica Thrall, declined to comment after the hearing.

He is charged with threatening to commit murder, intimidation of a witness, and willfully communicating a threat concerning a dangerous item.

Butze-Maille’s alleged comments and threats were first reported to school officials around noon on Dec. 6.

Once the threats were reported, Butze-Maille was taken out of class and brought to an associate principal, Superintendent Judith Scannell has said. A school resource officer then began the investigation, Police Chief Joseph Solomon has said.

Solomon said the school was not locked down Dec. 6 because it was determined there was no immediate threat. However after that incident and the deadly shooting in an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, school, city and police officials decided to boost security measures district wide.
