Gas prices back on the rise

BOSTON - Gas prices in Massachusetts rose 4 cents per gallon over the past week, the first weekly increase since early October.

According to AAA Southern New England’s latest survey of prices, a gallon of regular unleaded self-serve averaged $3.45 yesterday, 16 cents above the national average and eight cents above the average price in Massachusetts once year ago.

The gas tax is one source of revenue eyed by some on Beacon Hill to raise money for investments in transportation. Gov. Deval Patrick tried to raise the gas tax in 2009 but lawmakers instead boosted the sales tax and steered some of the new revenue into transportation.

A law approved over the summer required the Patrick administration to offer a long-term transportation financing plan by Monday but Patrick said on Friday that the plan needs more work and will instead be filed next week.
