Two arrested on drug charges in Groveland

GROVELAND — A man from Haverhill and another from Danvers were arrested last night on drug charges after a routine traffic stop turned up a quarter-pound of marijuana, $2,600 in cash and a scale used to weigh narcotics, police said this morning.

The driver of the car, Michael Gonzalez, 21, of 12 Freeman St., Apt. 3, Haverhill, was charged with operating under the influence of drugs, possession of a Class D drug with intent to distribute, failure to stay within marked lanes, defective equipment, possession of Class D drugs within 100 feet of a park and procuring alcohol for a minor.

The passenger in the car, Eric Allis, 20, of 5 Butler Ave., Apt. 1, Danvers, was charged with possession of Class D with intent to distribute, possession within 100 feet of a park, and being a minor in possession of alcohol.

According to Police Chief Robert Kirmelewicz, at around 9:30 p.m. police Det. James Morton noticed a car crossing the Bates Bridge and heading into Groveland.

He pulled it over on Main Street near the Pines Recreation Area for having defective equipment and a marked lanes violation.

The operator of the car, Gonzalez, failed a field sobriety test, Kirmelewicz said.

During the arrest and booking, Det. Morton found a large amount of marijuana and cash from both people in the car, the chief said.

Morton, who was backed up by Officer David Shanahan, recovered about a quarter-pound of marijuana and $2,600 in cash. In addition, they found a scale used to weigh drugs in the vehicle.

Both were held without bail overnight pending their arraignment in Haverhill District Court today.

According to Detective Morton's report, the two men were en route to a Groveland residence known by police for drug activity.
