Pair charged after allegedly trying to steal compressor, saw

SALEM — A Dover woman is in jail after she and a companion allegedly tried to steal an air compressor and saw, valued at about $250, from Home Depot Tuesday evening.

Julie Andrews, 41, was held after her arrest.

Andrews defaulted on bail from an arrest in Portsmouth last month. In that case, she was released on $1,000 personal recognizance. Her arrest Tuesday put her in default of the conditions associated with her earlier arrest and she was held.

She now also faces charges of attempt to commit theft by deception and attempt to commit theft.

She and a companion, Paul Grace, 41, of Methuen, are suspected of trying to return the compressor and saw for cash. But, Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten said, the two didn’t own the tools to begin with.

Grace faces a single charge of willful concealment and was released on $1,000 personal recognizance.

Police were called to the store at 289 S. Broadway just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Store security personnel stopped the pair as they tried to leave the store with the tools.

“They purchased some small merchandise, then told the cashier they had come in with the compressor and saw, and tried to return them for cash,” Patten said. “That request was denied. They left the store and loss prevention stopped them.”
