BOSTON (AP) — Dozens of staffers for key legislative leaders have received pay raises of 10 percent or more at a time of tight budgets.
Democratic House Speaker Robert DeLeo announced in November that many staffers were getting raises of about 3 percent.
But a Boston Herald review of state payroll records obtained through a public records request with the state’s Comptroller’s Office found that some staffers received much more than that.
The Senate’s legal counsel got a 20 percent raise.
DeLeo spokesman Seth Gitell , who got a 10 percent hike, said even with the raises, the House payroll is 10 percent lower than in 2009.
Republican staffers also got raises, one as high as 31 percent.
David Tuerck of Suffolk University’s Beacon Hill Institute called the raises “manifestly unfair to taxpayers.”
