Good Samaritans credited with helping save crash victim

LONDONDERRY - A motorist was seriously injured early this morning in a one-vehicle crash near 393 Mammoth Road.

Police credit two Good Samaritans with helping to rescue the victim.

The driver, whom police are not identifying, was trapped inside the vehicle, which caught fire after leaving the road just past 6:15 a.m.

The operator was trapped inside the vehicle when police arrived and Earl Wickline of Londonderry was trying to fight the fire with an extinguisher he got from a neighborhood resident, police said.

Sgt. Patrick Cheetham, Officers Jake King and Adam Lane, helped Wickline and a second Good Samaritan, Apryl Norris of Londonderry, free the victim.

Londonderry Fire Department personnel transported the victim to the parking lot at St. Jude's Church on Mammoth Road, where Boston Med-Flight landed and took the victim to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

His condition isn't known, police said, and his name won't be released until relatives have been notified.

There also was a dog in the vehicle. The animal was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic in Manchester and its injuries are not life threatening, according to police.

Early investigations show the driver was traveling south on Mammoth Road when his vehicle veered off the northbound shoulder and struck a tree. The road was snow covered at the time, police said, but they do not yet know whether road conditions contributed to the crash.
