Good Samaritans help police rescue crash victim

LONDONDERRY – A motorist suffered serious injuries early yesterday in a one-vehicle crash near 393 Mammoth Road.

But police credited two Good Samaritans with helping to rescue Robert Braley, 58, of Londonderry, who was trapped inside the vehicle, which caught fire after leaving the road and hitting a tree shortly after 6:15 a.m.

Braley was listed in serious condition at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston last night.

When police arrived, Earl Wickline of Londonderry was trying to fight the fire with an extinguisher he got from a neighborhood resident, police said.

Sgt. Patrick Cheetham, Officers Jake King and Adam Lane, helped Wickline and a second Good Samaritan, Apryl Norris of Londonderry, free Braley from the wreckage.

Londonderry Fire Department personnel transported Braley to the parking lot at St. Jude’s Church on Mammoth Road, where Boston Med-Flight landed and took the victim to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

There was also a dog in the vehicle. Police took the animal to an emergency veterinary clinic in Manchester where it was treated. Its injuries are not life threatening, according to police.

Preliminary results of the police investigations show the driver was traveling south on Mammoth Road when his vehicle veered off the northbound shoulder and struck a tree. The road was snow covered at the time, police said, but they do not yet know whether road conditions contributed to the crash.

Police said Braley was conscious last night, but unable to communicate verbally. They said he was able to communicate non-verbally.
