Woman dead, boy critical from Interstate 93 rollover

METHUEN — A Groton woman died and a 7-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries in an SUV rollover on Interstate 93, State Police said yesterday.

Nicole Deluca, 23, was taken to Lawrence General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead following the accident late Thursday afternoon.

The boy riding with Deluca was medflighted from the highway by helcopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Methuen fire officials said the boy had life-threatening injuries. State Police said the boy was in critical condition just after the crash a little before 4:30 p.m.

State Police would not comment on the relationship between Deluca and the boy.

The State Police collision team was working on a reconstruction of the crash.

The blue 1998 Chevrolet Blazer with New Hampshire plates Deluca was driving swerved in the left lane of Interstate 93 southbound between the Pelham Street and Lowell Street exits in Methuen, and rolled over several times before coming to rest on its roof against the rail barrier on the median.

No other vehicles were involved.

The Blazer was loaded with clothes and cleaning supplies, which were thrown along the grass median. Police closed all of I-93 south for a short time for the medflight helicopter to land and take the boy to Boston. SoLanes were closed southbound for more than an hour, and traffic backed up through Salem, N.H.

Traffic also was tied up northbound starting near Interstate 495.
