HAVERHILL — Police said a man wearing a black hoodie and a black ski mask used a knife to rob the Sovereign Bank at 340 Main St. yesterday.
The man walked into the bank just before 3 p.m., showed a knife and demanded cash from a teller, police said. They said the man fled the bank on foot with an undetermined amount of money. Police were notified at 2:55 p.m. of the robbery and searched the area but were unable to find the man. Local officers, with help from state police, are continuing the search. The bank is north of downtown and just outside Monument Square.
Police Lt. Kevin Dorr said investigators would review bank video surveillance tapes in hopes of identifying the man. The Eagle-Tribune has requested copies of the tapes or any photos that can be produced from them.
Haverhill police have recently had success in using security camera photos to identify crime suspects. In a Sept. 30 robbery of the CVS on Lowell Avenue, a store security camera photo released by police appeared in The Eagle-Tribune. It led to the arrest of Richard Kennedy, 41, of 10 Varnum St, Apt. 2.
Police said they received information from a resident identifying the person in the photo published Oct. 4 in The Eagle-Tribune as Kennedy. He is accused of using a handgun to rob prescription pills from the pharmacy. Police said he was identified through the photo even though he was wearing a scarf over his face.
In another case, police asked the public’s help in identifying a couple involved in the Oct. 26 theft of lottery scratch tickets from a Mobil gas station/convenience store in Haverhill. Police subsequently released store surveillance photographs of a man and woman suspected of pulling a scam at the Mobil Mart, 789 S. Main St., Bradford, in which they made off with $300 in scratch tickets, investigators said.
Several days after the release of the photos, police announced that a Maine couple had been identified and arrest warrants issued. Police said the man and his female accomplice pulled the same type of scam at gas stations/convenience stores in New Hampshire, Maine as well as in Massachusetts, triggering police investigations in all three states.
