LAWRENCE — A two-alarm fire broke out in a three-story wood frame house at 109 Ferry St. early last night, leaving four families seeking temporary shelter.
Lawrence Deputy Fire Chief Dan Kennedy estimated the damage to the building and its contents at between $50,000 and $100,000. Cause of the fire remained under investigation.
“The men made an excellent stop,” Kennedy said, noting firefighter knocked the fire down within 45 minutes and kept it from spreading to the third floor and attic.
“If they didn’t find it right away, we could have been there all night long. The fire was inside the walls and inside the ceilings. It was concealed until we started opening up walls and ceilings. These are the tough fires — the ones you got to go out and find,” he said.
All fire trucks in the city reported to the fire scene soon after 5:38 p.m. when the first alarm sounded. Methuen and Andover engine companies and a ladder truck from Lowell provided mutual aid coverage at the Central Fire Station while city firefighters battled the blaze.
