Former Timberlane teacher reports to jail

A former Timberlane Middle School teacher has begun serving his two- to four-year prison sentence for child pornography.

Scott Buatti reported to the Rockingham County sheriff just three weeks after the state Supreme Court rejected his appeal of his conviction on 10 counts of child pornography possession.

On Nov. 20, the state’s highest court upheld Buatti’s conviction. Buatti, who also served as a coach, had been free on bail pending his appeal. He was sentenced in June 2011.

It takes the state Supreme Court 30 days to certify to Superior Court that the conviction is being upheld, Rockingham County Attorney Jim Reams said yesterday in explaining the delay of Buatti’s incarceration.

In an order dated Tuesday, Rockingham County Superior Court Judge Kenneth McHugh ordered Buatti to report to jail.

It was a long time coming.

Buatti was arrested more than four years ago, in February 2008. He was put on administrative leave from Timberlane after he was indicted in April 2009, then later resigned from his position there.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents identified Buatti as one of 18 paid subscribers to a website containing child pornography.

During his trial in April 2011, Buatti denied being a subscriber. But he had registered with his own email address and used his Newton address when he paid $79.95 to join the site.

He also admitted to looking at adult pornography online, but insisted he never knowingly viewed child pornography. He blamed computer viruses for somehow downloading that material to his home computer.

“I know that as I surfed around the ‘net looking for adult pornography, there’s some weird stuff that pops up,” Buatti testified. “I may have seen child porn, but I did not look at it.”

It took the jury just three hours to find Buatti guilty on 20 child pornography-related charges, 10 charges of possession of child pornography and 10 of attempting to posses child pornography.
