A Manchester man will be charged for setting an illegal trap, which resulted in the death of a Londonderry veterinarian’s dog.
Melissa Fogelson was walking with her 4-year-old golden retriever in Auburn when the dog became caught in a body-gripping trap and died from its injuries.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department announced yesterday it charged George Klardie, 67, of Manchester with several trapping related violations.
Klardie’s body-gripping trap is supposed to be set in water at all times and is primarily used for catching beaver and otters. In New Hampshire, the owner of a trap is held liable for all injuries to domestic animals.
“Klardie has been very cooperative and remorseful throughout the investigation, and he expects to be held accountable for his actions.” Conservation Officer Chris McKee said. “This type of tragic incident is very rare and could have been readily avoided if the trap had been legally set.”
Klardie is scheduled to be arraigned in Circuit Court in Candia in February.
Fogelson works at the Methuen Veterinary Hospital. She could not be reached for comment.
Klardie did not respond to a phone message yesterday.
