---- — NORTH ANDOVER — A routine traffic stop turned into a half-hour chase yesterday afternoon.

Andrew Hanley, 18, 42 Royal Crest Drive, was arrested on eight charges after being pulled over for running a red light on Chickering Road, according to police.

Lt. Charles Gray said while patrol officer Stephen Diminico was approaching Hanley’s 2007 Jeep Wrangler at 12:45 p.m. yesterday, Hanley sped off.

Diminico followed Hanley from Andover Street to Chestnut Street to Hewitt Avenue. He then drove onto property of the Franklin School, before exiting back onto Andover Street.

Gray said Diminico then witnessed Hanley going the wrong way down the one way street of Dufton Court, where police called off the pursuit.

But just minutes later, another officer noticed Hanley’s Wrangler turning into the Kittredge Crossing condominiums. Police say Hanley began to flee on foot once there. Police searched the area for 15 minutes until they found Hanley emerge behind one of the condominium complexes. Following a brief foot chase, officers tackled Hanley and he was arrested.

Hanley was charged with a red light violation, a one way street violation, a marked lane violation, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, negligent operation of a vehicle, failure to stop for police, resisting arrest and minor in possession of alcohol.

As of last night, Hanley was still in custody while bail was being determined. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday.
