UPDATE: Trooper, driver sustain minor injuries in Monday night crash

HAVERHILL — A state trooper and a driver with a medical condition were both treated and released from area hospitals after an accident on Interstate-495 last night.

Sgt. Frank Puopolo, 51, assigned to troop A in Andover, was taken to Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport after suffering from minor injuries when the cruiser he was sitting in was struck from behind by a small SUV driven by a Haverhill man around 8:20 p.m.

Puopolo was treated and released from the hospital, according to State Police spokesman Dave Procopio.

Richard Verville, 64, was also treated and released from Lawrence General Hospital after the accident. He was driving a 2013 Kia Soul when he somehow swerved out of the travel lane and into the rear-end of Puopolo's car, which was parked behind a construction area near Exit 51/Route 125 on the northbound side of the highway.

State Police said Verville is not facing any charges at this time as he was suffering from a medical condition. Police would not reveal the nature of the medical condition.

The accident is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police Troop A, the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the Crime Scene Services Section.

Traffic on the northbound side of 495 was stopped for about 40 minutes as police investigated the accident scene. As of 9:30 p.m. only one of the four traffic lanes was open and debris was visible across the highway. Traffic continued to advance at a crawl two hours after the accident.
