Camper hits utility pole, blocking Haverhill traffic near N.H. line

HAVERHILL — An RV camper went off the road on North Broadway near the Atkinson line this afternoon, snapping a utility pole, injuring at least one person and closing the road to traffic.

The vehicle, which was travelling north, went off the road opposite 1020 North Broadway and snapped the pole about four feet from the ground just before 2:30 p.m.

The pole was left dangling off the ground. It did not appear the power lines were damaged.

The vehicle landed on its side just off the road and one person was trapped inside, but was taken out by rescue workers. A medflight helicopter was called to the scene, but it was unclear whether the person was taken to a hospital by the helicopter or an ambulance that was seen leaving the area.

Rescue workers said a second person was in the camper, but was not trapped.

Northbound traffic is being diverted away from North Broadway. Police said that section of North Broadway will be blocked off indefinitely.

A complete report will appear in tomorrow's Eagle-Tribune.
