Man killed outside Methuen nightclub

---- — METHUEN — One man is dead after a shooting outside a music club early yesterday morning, and police have not yet made an arrest.

David Rivera, 28, of 246 Farnham St., Lawrence, was treated on Greendale Street across the street from the Sahara Club and transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead yesterday morning.

“Shortly after 1 o’clock this morning Methuen Police received several 911 calls from the vicinity of the Sahara Club,” according to a statement form the office of District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett. “Emergency personnel responded to find the victim, who had been shot outside of the club. Rivera was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m.”

Blodgett spokesman Steve O’Connell said later yesterday that “police are following leads” for suspects and the investigation is ongoing.

The Methuen Fire Department said, without identifying Rivera, that rescuers treated him for multiple gunshot wounds yesterday morning, and an advanced life support team came from Lawrence General Hospital to assist.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

The Sahara is located on Bates Street, off East Street near Interstate 495. Greendale Street runs perpendicular to Bates.

Salim Lebbos, a relative of the family that owns the Sahara, said he was working inside the club, which frequently features jazz bands, last night and did not hear anything outside.

But club security members, who were trying to empty the place out at about 12:50 a.m. yesterday, heard the shots outside and ran to see what happened. “They told me to stay inside,” Lebbos said. He did not know whether Rivera was a patron.

Lebbos said the neighborhood is quiet and the patrons do not cause any problems.

Police interviewed the security employees, he said.

Blodgett urged anyone with information about the shooting to call Methuen police at 978-983-8676.
