Mayor-elect Rivera seeks to 'keep ballots safe'

LAWRENCE — Daniel Rivera called his first press conference as mayor-elect to discuss his plans "to keep Election Day ballots safe."

The press conference will be at noon today outside City Hall.

A vote count announced last night by the city showed River beat incumbent William Lantigua by a 60 votes out of more than 15,000 cast. Precinct-by-precinct numbers were unavailable.

"The numbers show that the residents of Lawrence are ready for new leadership," Rivera said in an email statement early today. "I am committed to serving as the Mayor of every neighborhood and every resident in Lawrence and I will work hard every day to improve public safety, support our public schools and bring jobs and industry to Lawrence."

Lantigua is expected to ask for a recount but has been mum on his plans.

Rivera thanked the 250 local volunteers for helping make his campaign a success.

"The level of support for this campaign has been incredible. People have turned out from every corner of the city. I am so incredibly grateful to all of the volunteers who gave their time, talent and resources," he said.

Rivera said a transition team will be created to help him from now to January, when he will be sworn into office if the count holds.

"Over the next few weeks, we will put together a team to work with the Lantigua administration and ensure a smooth transition in January," he said.

During the campaign, Rivera was endorsed by U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Congresswoman Niki Tsongas and State Representative Marcos Devers.

"This election was about the future of our city, and today we begin the job of making Lawrence better. Together we can be the Lawrence of our hopes, the Lawrence of our dreams, the Lawrence of the future."
