Rep. Costello invokes Fifth Amendment

BOSTON - State Rep. Michael Costello, D-Newburyport, invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination before being granted immunity and testifying today in the ongoing federal trial of three former state probation department probation managers accused of running a fraudulent hiring system.

“I asserted my Fifth Amendment privilege,” Costello said on the stand in federal court. The immunity order is dated May 8, 2014. Costello is testifying about the hiring of Mari-Elena Sanchez, who was hired as a juvenile probation officer. Costello is the House chairman of the Committee on Financial Services and is not running for re-election.
